Function of Beauty makes customized shampoo and conditioners. I’ve now been using the products for a little over a month and wanted to give my full Function of Beauty review.
The way Function of Beauty works is you take a quiz about your hair type and hair goals. You decide what scent you want and the color you want your formula to be. They then make a custom shampoo and conditioner just for you and what you’re looking for.
As with many things I was super skeptical at first. But I figured I got time to kill and I’m sure it won’t ruin my hair, why not give it a go! I’ve been SUPER curious about these customized shampoos and conditioners for a while now. Apparently, it took a pandemic to get me to pull the trigger and finally order. It might seem silly considering I live alone and no one is seeing me on a daily basis but I’ve been trying to make my showers as luxurious as possible lately. If I can’t go to the spa, gotta bring the spa to my teeny tiny bathroom.

Function of Beauty Reviews:
My Hair Woes:
A bit about my hair before we dive in:
My hair is pretty straight but can get frizzy. I have A LOT of hair. While the actual strands are thin, there is a ton of it on my head. I’d say it’s pretty healthy overall, I’ve never colored my hair and I only use a straightening iron every once in a while.
Over the years I’ve started getting keratin treatments to manage the frizz and weight of my hair so it’s easier to style. I was actually planning on getting a treatment in March so I’d be set for the summer… but then the pandemic happened. And thank god I didn’t, it would’ve been a waste of money to hang out at home all day. Because of the keratin, I stick to sulfate-free products which is supposed to help make the treatment last longer.
Enough about me, let’s talk about the goods!
Creating Your Formula:
Much like a quiz in Seventeen Magazine, Function of Beauty asks you a series of questions about your hair and what you’re looking for in a shampoo and conditioner.
All products are cruelty-free, vegan, sulfate-free, and paraben-free. You can also choose to make your formula silicone-free as well.
I chose to focus on:
- shine
- straighten
- anti-frizz
- hydrate
- oil control
For my scent, I went with peach and pink and blue as my colors.
So, does it work?
I’ve now been using both the shampoo and conditioner for a little over a month and I gotta say: My hair looks freaking fabulous. It’s shiny, for the most part, frizz-free, and just looks really healthy — which is super impressive considering I’m long overdue for a haircut. I’ve received a few compliments from friends on Instagram and Zoom calls saying how good my hair looks. Well damn, thank you!
Of course, life right now is far from normal but I still leave my house most days to go for a walk. Even on days it’s been a bit moist out and my hair would usually get all wavy and frizzy, my hair has still stayed straight, frizz-free, and pretty fabulous. That’s a win in my book!
What I LOVE:
The Smell: Right away I fell in love with the delicious peach scent. It’s fruity without being too fake. What’s not to love about something peach-scented?
Pump: I love that both the shampoo and conditioner come with a pump. Makes it super easy to control how much product you use.
Aesthetic: I’m a sucker for a product that looks super cute. Function of Beauty definitely nails it on the “cute” front with the fun-colored bottles.
Subscription option: I haven’t set up a subscription (yet) but I do like that there’s an option for it so you can save money.
My hair looks REALLY good: Okay, maybe the most important thing but like I said above, I genuinely think my hair looks better than it usually does. I’ve had moments in the past few weeks where I forgot I was using a new shampoo/conditioner and I’ve thought damn, my hair looks really good lately.
What I don’t love:
The price + Size: This stuff ain’t cheap, that’s for sure. I paid $39 total for 8 ounces of shampoo and 8 ounces of conditioner. When the bottles arrived I realized just how small 8 ounces is. It’s tiny!
I will say this stuff definitely lasts, though. I’ve been using both products roughly every other day since mid-March and I’m only about 1/3 of the way through both bottles. Going forward I might subscribe or buy the bigger bottles now that I know I like it to save some money in the long run. (Get $5 off your first order using this link)
The smell doesn’t “linger”: Maybe I’m just totally desensitized to the smell by now, but the delicious peach-y scent doesn’t seem to linger on my hair after I wash the product out. For this order, I went with the middle option for how strong I wanted the scent to be. Going forward I might up that to the highest option.
My hair seems to still get oily faster: My hair can look really dirty fast since it’s long and straight.
I’ve found that since using this product my hair does get oily faster than it typically does. In normal times I can maybe get away with 2-3 days of wearing my hair down before it looks awful. Lately, my hair has been looking and feeling oily after less than 2 days. In normal times I also only style my hair on the weekends, so I’m not 100% sure if my hair feels oily because of the new product or because I’m styling my hair more often right now.
All in All:
I kind of hate that I love this product SO much because it’s pretty pricey. Come on hair, why you gotta look SO good?
Will I buy more when I’m out? Yes. The only tweaks I might make are: stronger scent (go BIG or go home?) and maybe switch up the colors for funsies.
